If you buy a used car from a dealer, you are protected under consumer law. However, if you buy from a private individual, you do not have the same rights because the person selling the car is not selling it as part of their business.<\/p>\n

Buying from a dealer<\/h2>\n

When you buy a car from a dealer, you have the same rights as when you buy any other product from a business. Read more about your rights when you buy goods<\/a>, and your rights when you buy second-hand goods<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What to do if something goes wrong<\/h3>\n

If you have a problem after you buy a car, consumer law<\/a> sets out the steps a business must take to resolve your issue. Remember that these rights will not apply if the issue was pointed out to you before you bought the car.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tI paid with cash or a personal loan\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n

If you paid for your car by cash or a personal loan that you arranged yourself, for example from a bank or credit union, the car dealer is responsible for resolving your issue. Your first step is to contact the car dealer. If they can\u2019t resolve the issue, there are other steps you can take.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tThe dealer organised finance (Hire Purchase or PCP)\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n

If you paid for your car with Hire Purchase or a PCP, the finance company is the legal owner of your car and so they are responsible for resolving your issue. As a practical first step, you should contact the car dealer and ask them to resolve your issue. If they can\u2019t resolve the issue, you should then contact the finance company who owns your car.<\/p>\n

Buying privately<\/h2>\n
\n\n

You do not have the same consumer rights if you buy a car from another consumer. Because of this you should be very careful when buying from a private seller; you really need to be aware of what you\u2019re buying, or get an expert to check it out before you buy. If something goes wrong after you buy from another individual there may be little you can do beyond taking a civil case through the courts.<\/p>\n

Disguised traders<\/h2>\n

A disguised trader is a business who acts as though they are a private seller, even though they are selling as part of their business. They may do this by selling cars through online platforms and marking the ads as private sales. Disguised trading is illegal.
