It can be verbal or written. This page covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the information you must have before you agree to a contract<\/li>\n<li>that a business must have fair terms and conditions in a contract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"accordion-1\" class=\"accordion no-js\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"accordion-1-t1\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"accordion-1-c1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tContract information\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"accordion-1-c1\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Consumer law requires that you have all of the information you need before you agree to a contract. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>details of what you are buying<\/li>\n<li>how much it costs and how to pay<\/li>\n<li>any additional charges and fees<\/li>\n<li>when changes can be made to the contract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The information must be presented so that you understand what you\u2019re signing up to. This means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it is written in plain and understandable language<\/li>\n<li>the terms are clearly presented and are not hidden in the small print<\/li>\n<li>new or complex terms are brought to your attention<\/li>\n<li>terms that cover costs are clearly explained, for example, cancellation charges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you agree a contract, you are bound by its terms and conditions. Always make sure you read the terms and conditions. It\u2019s useful to know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>how you can cancel your contract &#8211; for example, you may want to switch provider<\/li>\n<li>the length of your contract and what happens next \u2013 for example, at the end of one year does your contract automatically roll over for another year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"accordion-1-t2\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"accordion-1-c2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tContract terms\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"accordion-1-c2\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Consumer law requires that the terms and conditions used by a business in a contract are fair. This means that they do not give a business an unfair advantage over you. Consumer law lists contract terms that are always unfair (the black list) and those which may be unfair (the grey list). Only a Court can declare if a term is unfair. Read the full <a href=\"\/consumers\/contracts-and-services\/contract-terms-that-may-be-unfair\/\">list of unfair terms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some terms cannot be assessed for unfairness, these include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>core terms &#8211; for example, the main subject matter or purchase price<\/li>\n<li>terms you negotiated with the business<\/li>\n<li>terms that are a legal requirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"accordion-1-t3\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"accordion-1-c3\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tMaking a complaint about an unfair term\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"accordion-1-c3\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If you feel that a term in a contract is unfair, you should contact the business and ask them to address your concerns.<\/p>\n<p>You should also <a href=\"\/consumers\/contact\/contact-us\/\">report your issue<\/a> to us or by calling our helpline on 01 402 5555.
