{"id":42239,"date":"2022-05-09T13:05:46","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T12:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ccpc.ie\/business\/?p=42239"},"modified":"2022-05-09T13:05:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T12:05:46","slug":"ccpc-carries-out-unannounced-inspections-of-car-dealers-in-munster-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ccpc.inventise.ie\/business\/ccpc-carries-out-unannounced-inspections-of-car-dealers-in-munster-area\/","title":{"rendered":"CCPC carries out unannounced inspections of car dealers in Munster area"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>CCPC car dealer inspections carried out across Cork and Kerry<\/li>\n<li>Consumers advised to use CCPC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ccpc.inventise.ie\/consumers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Car-buyers-checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Buying a Car\u2019 checklist<\/a> when buying a<br \/>\nsecond-hand car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has reminded car dealers of their legal obligation to give complete and correct information to consumers when they are selling a car.<\/p>\n<p>The CCPC engaged with car dealers as they carried out unannounced inspections of garages and used car dealerships in Counties Cork and Kerry in the last fortnight. Authorised officers from the CCPC, assisted by colleagues from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau and local Garda\u00ed, inspected vehicles for evidence that traders may be misleading consumers about their history.<\/p>\n<p>Car dealers must provide consumers with accurate information on a vehicle\u2019s roadworthiness and history, including mileage and any damage history. It is an offence for dealers to give false, misleading or deceptive information about the history of a car. If a car dealer is found guilty of such an offence, they may be liable for a fine of up to \u20ac4,000 and up to six months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Significant changes in the used car market over the past 18 months, including increased prices and a reduction in imports from the UK post-Brexit, mean that in some cases car dealers are now sourcing used cars from further afield, including the Japanese market. The CCPC reminded car dealers that regardless of where vehicles originate, they are legally required to comply with consumer protection legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The CCPC advises consumers to exercise caution and carry out independent research before they purchase a used car.
