The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has commenced a market study into the public liability insurance sector in Ireland. The commencement of this study follows a ministerial request from the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD;<\/p>\n
\u201cIn accordance with section 10 (4) of the Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2014, I am requesting the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to carry out a study\/analysis of the public liability insurance market. The study should examine how the market operates, how competition works in that market and whether any practice or method of competition affects the pricing levels of public liability insurance within the market.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
This market has national significance and the CCPC looks forward to conducting this market study and contributing to the State\u2019s efforts to bring about widely-supported change in the sector.<\/p>\n
The project is in the early stages and once the Terms of Reference has been finalised, the CCPC will undertake an extensive process of engagement with all relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n
Clarification: CCPC activity in the public liability insurance market<\/strong><\/p>\n
Following recent media reports, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) wishes to clarify that the CCPC\u2019s current activity in the public liability insurance market is limited to carrying out a market study. The CCPC is not investigating a breach of competition law in the public liability insurance market. The CCPC is independent in the exercise of its enforcement functions. It cannot be directed to investigate suspected breaches of competition law in any particular sector or by any particular set of economic operators.<\/p>\n
